View from the River

Midnite Painter 23 Aug 2020

20x20, used black gesso except for the sky, the train is gesso as well. Cad yellow, Indian yellow, and pink in sky, atop liquid white. A big flaw Iā€™m seeing lately is I keep making angled water lines.

May be you want to try few lines with thinned burnt umber as guide to ensure that when you go in you have some reference to keep it horizontal. May be a grid will be helpful. I suggest thinned paint and not the gesso because it will go away as you will be mixing paints on the top.
Or you can use builders tape for horizon line and after painting sky part you can remove the tape and have a great reference to horizontal line.

I have the same issue, I do not have easel however, and I try to keep very careful look at what is going on with horizontal lines, very often i measure with the brush to ensure the line is not deviating from horizontal.

If you paint on the easel step back more often to see problems sooner than later.
